Village Spring Clean 2016

After good weather for the last two years spring clean, we reverted to starting in the wet this year, although as usual the weather improved as the morning went on. Despite the rain a group of just over 20 people turned up at the Hare & Hounds for coffee and biscuits courtesy of Ann-Marie and Adrian. Also a group of Brownies with adult supervisors also joined in and headed off to pick up litter in and around the recreation ground and were rewarded with goodies provided by the Co-op. The adults split into three groups concentrating on Hallifax Gardens, the verge by the gate to the recreation ground in Fullers Road and the pavements and verges along The Long Road and at the junction of Chapel Road and The Avenue. The new section of ‘pathway’ along The Avenue was also defended from encroaching verge and the new bed planted in front of the village shop during last year’s Spring Clean was tidied up.

All of these areas are benefiting from regular input from volunteers at Clean Ups and the amount of waste collected for Waverley to take away after the event this year was smaller than in previous years. Hallifax gardens in particular looked very smart at the end of the session with old ‘leggy’ plants in the centre bed replaced by new young plants, the lawn edged and the hedge at last having a flat top.

At the end of the session members of the team adjourned to the Hare & Hounds for a well deserved drink and some lunch whilst taking the opportunity to catch up on the latest village news.
